Riga – the good-humoured city

Riga is the largest city in the Baltic states, the capital of Latvia, nestling on the gulf bearing the same name. It was founded in 1201 by German merchants, led by Bremen Canon Albert von Bekeshovede and remained under German control till the 17th century. The most bewitching part of the capital is the old town, also called old Riga.

Tip: Visit Riga Cathedral, the largest church in the Baltic states, a strange combination of Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque styles.

Finding your way to and from the airport

By car:

Riga International Airport is around 15 to 20 minutes from the city centre and can be easily reached from the A10 motorway, exit P133.

By bus:

Bus 22 provides a direct link from the airport to the city centre (Abrenes Street), running every 10-30 minutes. The bus station is opposite the terminal building behind the parking spaces. Journey time is around 30 minutes. A one-way ticket costs LVL 0.20. Bus 22A connects the airport to hotels in the city centre, but some hotels also offer their own shuttle service.

By taxi:

The taxi rank is outside the arrivals hall (level 1). Journey time to the city centre is around 15 minutes. Taxi fares start off with a LVL 0.40 flat rate plus LVL 0.35 per kilometre. On average a taxi ride to the city centre should cost around LVL 5.

Hire cars:

There are centrally-located Sixt and Avis rental locations at all Germanwings destinations. Reserve a car here and get great bargains.

At the airport

Riga International Airport is around 13 km southwest of the city centre and is the largest airport in the Baltic states. Check-in counters are on level 2, arrivals on level 1.

Parking:

There are short and long-stay parking spaces. The short-stay car park is directly opposite the passenger terminal building and costs LVL 0.30 for 30 minutes. The long-stay car park is next to the A10 motorway and costs LVL 2.50 per 24 hours.
